How to make plans with friends in Polish

An invitation becomes a plan when you agree on the details. These phrases use informal Polish for a conversation with a friend. The Saturday walk and times in the dialogue are fictional practice details, so you can focus on making a suggestion and responding to a change.

THE QUICK ANSWER

To make plans with a friend in Polish, ask Masz czas w sobotę? (Are you free on Saturday?). Suggest a time with Spotkajmy się o czternastej (Let’s meet at two p.m.) and ask Gdzie się spotkamy? (Where shall we meet?). Confirm the day, time and place together before saying goodbye.

Start with a day and an activity

Masz czas w sobotę? asks whether your friend is available on Saturday. You can then suggest an activity: Może pójdziemy na spacer? A quick Chętnie! accepts the idea. All three belong to an informal exchange with someone you address as ty.

Learn the day as a short phrase: w sobotę (on Saturday), w niedzielę (on Sunday) or w piątek (on Friday). Polish weekday names normally start with a lowercase letter. If you cannot accept, Niestety, nie mogę is enough; you can follow it with an alternative day or time.

Ask what time, then check whether it works

O której się spotkamy? asks for the meeting time. Answer with o and the hour: o trzynastej (at one p.m.) or o czternastej (at two p.m.). These examples use the 24-hour clock, so the afternoon is clear. Spotkajmy się means Let’s meet; keep się in the phrase.

Czy pasuje ci czternasta? asks whether two p.m. works for your friend. Here czternasta is the hour being proposed; after o, it becomes czternastej. To accept, say Pasuje mi. To change the time, you can say O trzynastej nie mogę. Może o czternastej? (I cannot make one p.m. How about two p.m.?).

Confirm the place as well as the time

Gdzie się spotkamy? asks where you will meet. Spotkajmy się przy wejściu do parku suggests meeting by the park entrance. Przy wejściu describes a place by the entrance; w parku means in the park. The two descriptions may lead you to different meeting points, so be specific.

Repeat the final agreement as one line: W sobotę o czternastej przy wejściu do parku (On Saturday at two p.m. by the entrance to the park). If there are several entrances, agree which one. Then Do zobaczenia w sobotę! closes the conversation with the day you have chosen.

YOUR TURN

One small speaking challenge.

Use the fictional Saturday walk. Ask your friend what time to meet, propose two p.m., and agree on the park entrance. On a second round, practise saying that one p.m. does not work and offering two p.m. instead. Finish by repeating all three details: day, time and place.

In the fictional dialogue, one p.m. does not work. Your friend agrees to two p.m. Which sentence confirms that final time?

Show the answer

Spotkajmy się o czternastej. O czternastej means at 14:00, or two p.m., the agreed time. O trzynastej means at one p.m.; Gdzie się spotkamy? asks about the place.

Now say Spotkajmy się o czternastej. aloud.
