How to collect a parcel in Polish

This guide follows a fictional parcel collection at a staffed post-office counter. Learn the words for the parcel, the notice and the collection itself, then practise responding to staff. The dialogue uses a collection notice and a passport as practice props. Check your own collection notice for where to go and what to bring.

THE QUICK ANSWER

To collect a parcel in Polish, say Dzień dobry. Chcę odebrać paczkę (Hello. I would like to collect a parcel). If you have a collection notice, add Mam awizo. At a staffed counter, you may hear Proszę potwierdzić odbiór tutaj (Please confirm receipt here).

WORDS YOU CAN USE TODAY

10 useful phrases

Listen to the Polish, then try it aloud. Audio uses a synthetic Polish voice; no voice installation is needed.

01

Chcę odebrać paczkę.

I would like to collect a parcel.

Literally, I want to collect a parcel. With a polite greeting, this gives a clear reason for your visit without a gendered conditional form.

02

Mam awizo.

I have a collection notice.

At the post office, awizo is a notice that a delivery is waiting to be collected. Mam awizo keeps the same ending as the dictionary form.

03

Czy paczka jest już do odbioru?

Is the parcel ready for collection yet?

Do odbioru means for collection. Już checks whether it is ready by now.

04

Poproszę awizo.

The collection notice, please.

A request you may hear from staff. Proszę, oto awizo means Here you are; here is the notice.

05

Proszę pokazać dokument tożsamości.

Please show an identity document.

Dokument tożsamości means identity document. Pokazać means show.

06

Proszę, oto awizo i mój paszport.

Here you are; here is the collection notice and my passport.

The fictional customer has a passport in this exchange. Mój paszport means my passport.

07

Proszę chwilę poczekać.

Please wait a moment.

Staff may say this while checking the parcel. Chwilę means a moment in this phrase.

08

Proszę potwierdzić odbiór tutaj.

Please confirm receipt here.

Odbiór is the collection or receipt of something. Tutaj means here.

09

Gdzie mam podpisać?

Where should I sign?

A useful question when a signature is requested and you are unsure where it belongs.

10

Gotowe, dziękuję.

Done, thank you.

Use this after completing the requested step. Gotowe does not change with the speaker’s gender.

Say collect, then explain what you have

Start with Dzień dobry and Chcę odebrać paczkę. The dictionary form paczka becomes paczkę because it is the thing you want to collect. Staff may also call it a przesyłka (a postal item or shipment). In this parcel conversation, both words can refer to the same item.

Mam awizo tells staff that you have a collection notice. It is different from saying Mam paczkę (I have a parcel), which suggests you already have the parcel itself. If you are checking its status, ask Czy paczka jest już do odbioru? An awizo and an electronic collection code are different things; use the word that matches what you actually have.

Recognise the requests at the counter

Poproszę awizo asks for the notice. Proszę pokazać dokument tożsamości asks you to show an identity document. In the fictional dialogue, the customer responds Proszę, oto awizo i mój paszport. The passport belongs to that example; check the operator’s instructions for your own collection.

Proszę chwilę poczekać means Please wait a moment. You can reply Oczywiście (Of course). If you miss the next instruction, Proszę powtórzyć (Please repeat that) is useful here too. Listen for the action word: pokazać means show, poczekać means wait, and potwierdzić means confirm.

Understand odbiór and ask where to sign

Odebrać is the verb to collect; odbiór is the noun for collection or receipt. Compare Chcę odebrać paczkę with Proszę potwierdzić odbiór tutaj. After do, the noun becomes odbioru, as in paczka do odbioru (a parcel for collection).

If the staff member asks for a signature, ask Gdzie mam podpisać? They may point and say Tutaj, proszę (Here, please). In the dialogue, the customer completes that step and says Gotowe, dziękuję. Finish with Do widzenia. This guide practises the exchange at a staffed counter; parcel-locker screens and collection methods have their own instructions.

YOUR TURN

One small speaking challenge.

Practise the fictional counter exchange without giving any real names, document numbers or collection codes. Say why you are there, say that you have an awizo, and ask where to sign. Then switch roles and practise recognising the three actions: show, wait and confirm.

You have a collection notice and want to collect the parcel. Which sentence tells staff why you are at the counter?

Show the answer

Chcę odebrać paczkę. Chcę odebrać paczkę says that you want to collect a parcel. Mam paczkę says you already have a parcel; Gdzie mam podpisać? asks where to sign.

Now say Chcę odebrać paczkę. aloud.
