How to buy a bus or tram ticket in Polish

Ticket types and rules vary between cities and services. These phrases help you ask what you need to know without assuming that one ticket or validation rule works everywhere in Poland.

THE QUICK ANSWER

To ask for a full-fare ticket in Polish, say Poproszę bilet normalny. Ask Gdzie mogę kupić bilet? to find out where to buy one, and Czy trzeba skasować bilet? to check whether it needs validation.

Choose the right words for your ticket

Bilet is one ticket; dwa bilety means two tickets. A full-fare ticket is bilet normalny. You may also see bilet ulgowy, which means a reduced-fare ticket. Check the operator’s eligibility rules before choosing a reduced fare.

Use Gdzie mogę kupić bilet? if you cannot find a machine or counter. A ticket machine is a biletomat. The correct ticket may depend on the city, route, zones or journey time.

Check validation instead of guessing

Ask Czy trzeba skasować bilet? when you are unsure whether you must validate it. Paper tickets, mobile tickets and payment-card systems can work differently, so follow the instructions for the operator and ticket you are using.

This guide teaches the language for asking. It does not give current fares, timetables or city-specific ticket rules. In the example below, the seller asks you to read the instructions on your particular ticket.

YOUR TURN

One small speaking challenge.

Practise asking for one ticket, then two. Say Poproszę bilet normalny and Poproszę dwa bilety normalne without adding a price or a ticket duration.

Which question checks whether your ticket needs validation?

Show the answer

Czy trzeba skasować bilet? Skasować bilet means validate a ticket here. The question asks whether that step is needed.

Now say Czy trzeba skasować bilet? aloud.
